Pizza with a Purpose

From the beginning Malawi’s Pizza has been purpose driven. Co-Founder, Blake Roney’s vision to help feed some of the most vulnerable children in the world inspired our Meal for Meal exchange program.

For each meal purchased in one of our restaurants we donate a nutritious meal to a child in Malawi, Africa.

Since our inception we have donated hundreds of thousands of meals to children in Malawi. You can visit one of our restaurants and not only enjoy a wonderful experience but also feel good knowing that you are contributing to a truly meaningful cause.

Meals Have Been Delivered to Children in Need

Forged in the Ovens of Innovation

Utah businessman Blake Roney was on a humanitarian trip in Malawi when he realized the people in the struggling southeastern African nation needed more than occasional outside help. They needed food, and on a regular and sustained basis.

From there the idea for Malawi’s Pizza – Pizza with a Purpose was born, a company created with the core mission of doing good through franchising by donating a nutritious meal to a child in Malawi for every meal sold.

Blake partnered with local Chef Kent Andersen to create the concept. And today, nearly a million meals have been provided through the Meal-for-Meal Exchange Program. The program also helps grow Malawi’s economy by purchasing local wheat and having it blended with vitamins and nutrients by local businesses, which then deliver it to children and their families throughout the country.

It’s a program that is a true lifesaver for a country where many people where people have ample food only in the years that they are fortunate to have enough rain for a good growing season.
Following yet another poor season in 2016, an estimated 2.8 million people there are now grappling with hunger.

Malawi’s Pizza – Pizza with a Purpose gives consumers a delicious way to make a difference every time they go out to eat. It also offers franchisees a new model for engaged corporate social responsibility by making philanthropy a cornerstone of their business model rather than an afterthought.

Malawi’s ‘Pizza with a Purpose’ Delivers 1 Million Meals to Africa, Announces National Expansion

PROVO, Utah (Nov. 9, 2017) — Malawi’s Pizza, the nation’s only gourmet pizza franchise that pairs good food with doing good, today announced it has delivered 1 million meals to children in the impoverished nation of Malawi, a milestone it is celebrating with plans for a national expansion and the launch of a journey to deliver millions more under its founding commitment to donate one meal for every meal sold.

“Today is a very exciting day for us here at Malawi’s Pizza,” said Co-Founder Blake Roney. “Hitting the 1 million mark in our Meal-for-Meal Exchange Program with just a few restaurants has been truly remarkable. Not only have we been able to make a real impact on children’s lives, reaching this milestone also proves that the unique business model we developed around the core philosophy of giving back is resonating. “With our national expansion, we are looking forward now to quickening our pace and delivering millions more meals in the years to come.”

Malawi’s Pizza – Pizza with a Purpose was created by Roney in partnership with Chef Kent Andersen after the Utah business man returned from a humanitarian trip to Malawi. With some 6.5 million people there grappling with hunger, Roney said he realized they needed more than occasional help. They needed food, and on a regular and sustained basis.

“None of us alone can change the world,” Andersen said. “But we offer consumers an easy way to change a child’s life by making a conscious decision about where to buy their next meal. We are extremely grateful for our customers, franchisees, staff, local communities and others who have supported us in this journey to address hunger in Malawi. After all, none of this would be possible without our loyal customers and employees.”

Under the Meal-for-Meal Exchange Program, the company delivers nutrient-dense meals to children and their families in Malawi. The company buys local maize that is then blended with vitamins and nutrients and delivered to schools and villages throughout the country in partnership with Feed the Children.

“The meals provided through Malawi Pizza have directly benefited our school meals program and early childhood development program in Malawi,” said Scott Killough, PhD., senior vice president of international operations, Feed the Children. “Partnerships with businesses like this are critically important to the work we do. Hunger is a serious issue and it will take all of us working together to defeat it.”

Studies have shown that consumers are increasingly seeking out brands that support a good cause. And while many businesses today are involved in philanthropic efforts and partnerships, Malawi’s was developed specifically around the meal giveback program. Each of its franchises also partners with a local hunger-fighting charity. Malawi’s Pizza currently has three stores in Utah, Texas and Virginia, with a fourth about to open in the Houston-area and more than 20 in the development pipeline, including four more in the Virginia area. Working with franchise expert, Dr. Ben Litalien from Georgetown University, Malawi’s Pizza has launched a regional developer franchise model and is seeking qualified foodservice operators to develop franchises in major markets across the U.S.

Celebrations, Giveaways and Family-friendly activities Throughout Weekend

Tuesday, June 6, 2017 – Fredericksburg, VA – The Church Restaurant Group, LLC announced today the opening of the first Malawi’s Pizza – Pizza with a Purpose® franchise on the eastern seaboard with grand opening celebrations beginning Friday, June 23 through Sunday, June 25, 2017. The fast-casual gourmet pizza restaurant is in the Village of Spotsylvania Towne Centre in Fredericksburg, its first of five locations in the Northern Virginia area.

Malawi’s Pizza – Pizza with a Purpose® is a fast-casual dining concept offering gourmet pizzas, pastas, salads and desserts served with the freshest ingredients all within minutes of ordering. “We are thrilled to bring this unique dining experience to the Fredericksburg community,” said franchise owner, Patrick Church. Church and his wife, Rebecca Church, have been managing the planning and construction of the restaurant since last Fall.

“Just as important as fresh and chef-created menu options, Malawi’s Pizza prides itself on an unprecedented commitment to corporate social responsibility with its award-winning Meal for Meal® Exchange Program,” said Church. For every meal purchased at a Malawi’s restaurant, a nutrient-dense meal is donated to a child in Malawi, Africa. Malawi’s “Journey to a Million Meals,” reached a milestone last month, with 942,669 meals donated.

“Pizza with a Purpose® is more than a marketing tactic, it is a serious corporate commitment to ‘pay it forward’ to those in need,” said Corporate CEO and culinary chef, Kent Andersen. “This program redefines ‘voluntourism.’ Customers can make a difference by eating at a local Malawi’s since every purchase supports kids in need and builds the local economy in Malawi by funding farmers and businesses that are providing meals to these children,” Andersen said.

In addition to the new restaurant in Fredericksburg, the fifth Malawi’s in the U.S., The Church Restaurant Group plans to establish four additional locations in the Northern Virginia area. Malawi’s does not sell individual franchises, only area development opportunities. This unique business model was designed by franchise expert, Dr. Ben Litalien, CFE.

“Ideally, we are looking for multi-unit operators that want to add a fast-casual, gourmet pizza offer to their portfolio,” said Dr. Litalien, “looking to ramp-up quickly with experienced parties that appreciate our unique model.”

The Malawi’s restaurant in Fredericksburg will participate in the Taste of the Village “restaurant crawl” by the Spotsylvania Mall on June 8th. The official Grand Opening at the restaurant, located at 1 Towne Centre Boulevard, will begin on Friday, June 23 at 11 a.m. Celebrations and special activities are planned through Sunday, June 25.
